Manmademan "Creation Myth"

Manmademan is out with their third album, this time on Elektrik Orgasm Records...

Elektrik Orgasm Records based in the UK surprise me every time they release something. It is a pretty anonymous label that doesn’t promote their releases very much. Now they are out with their fourth CD release, which is no other than the third album by Manmademan! Manmademan are Sonya Bailey and Paul Baguley. A couple that are veterans in the psytrance scene. They have previously released one album on Flying Rhino Records (Lovetechnology, 2000) and an album on Transient Records (Cell Division, 2002).

It seems like the couple has gone deeper in the ground to a more dark style since the last time I heard anything by them. The first track is a dark, hard pushing track. Pumping, intense beats and some dark psychedelic sounds jumping above now and then. Not much interesting sounds or variation, and it gets quickly boring in my ears. Track 2 is a totally stumpy track. Hard, banging beats all the way through, but not much variation of sounds here either. Dark, but too monotonous. Track 3 goes even deeper. Deep, hard pumping bass line, but we don’t get much else here. Why not try to vary a little bit more ? Track 4 has bit more drifting vibe, but continues the minimal style. There are some more weird sounds in there, but it doesn’t sound very interesting.

Track 5 sounds a little bit different. Here they have put in some tribal drums between the pumping bass line, and things get better at once. There is also more melody here. Some kind of mystic, eastern vibe. Weird, but cool. Track 6 goes back to a more minimal sound picture again. I think it would be enough with one track like this here, but they give us way too many tracks like this. Track 7 sounds better with a bit more massive sound picture and a drifting vibe. Reminds me a bit of the style Tristan often plays in his sets. Track 8 follows the minimal road. Hard and dark, but a big lack of variation. The last track we get from this couple on their third album is pretty weird. The same pumping dark style, but with some weird guitar sounds mixed in.

Manmademan used to give us more variation than this, so this album was totally disappointing in my ears. I also think Elektrik Orgasm Records use to release very interesting experimental trance, but this time it doesn’t sound very exciting.

Perfect music. Like Michael Kohlbecker on a more hyper-cyber edge. My ears ring with numerous attempts from various artists...this one finally rings true, no gobbledy gook here. Please keep up the good work!
agreed with PKS :)

indeed this album sounds like you play track no. 1 in a loop... and not even that, it would still sound the same if you played the 1st minute from track 1 in a loop... Don't get me wrong, the style is nice and pumping for those dark hours in the night but having a full album of this... well, it gets old really fast... However there is one exception: track no. 5: Program Reality which is a KILLER!!! It's currently my no. 1 track!!! You get this drifting spiritual voice singing and the first time around it "morphs" into some bell chimes, the effect is incredible!!! I'm wondering if they didn't try to reproduce the buzzing sound McKenna described he heard during his ayahuasca experience. Anyway, somehow this particular track gives me the feeling that I'm crossing the Mexican border in an old Chevy van loaded with cocaine in a secret meeting with Pablo Escobar... hehehe something that creates such visions has to be good!! It's a real shame that other tracks on the album aren't like this :( So all in all I rate this 6/10: 8 average tracks + 1 absolute killer!!
