Spun Records is out with their 7th release...

The growling mad team is out with a new compilation, this time called Zero-1 with a Matrix cover art. And as usual we get mostly GMS involved stuff, or tracks that sounds like GMS.

Zero-1 (Spun Records) 2003 (SPUNCD07)

1. GMS – Animatrix
2. Wizzy Noise – Multivitamin
3. Poli Vs. Cyrus The Virus – Biological Planet
4. Dynamic – Lets Rock
5. GMS – Flashback
6. Deedrah – Hellsonic (Juvenile Rmx)
7. Soundaholix – Fractal Explorer
8. Joti Vs. Altom – Belladonna
9. Bushman – Rubber
10. Zorba – Soma

First out is a track by Growling Mad Scientists themselves, called Animatrix. And Animatrix is what you get. It starts with a voice sample from the incredible movie Animatrix. Then we jump over to full on, typical GMS stuff. I heard them play this track live at Samothraki Dance Festival 2003, and people sure did enjoy it on the dance floor. GMS knows how to rock a party, but as I have said before, why not try to make it a little bit different, instead of having the same GMS sound in every track? Track 2 is by Wizzy Noise, who finally has started to make some cool tracks lately. The track we get here is better than most of the tracks I have heard by them before. More melodic and varied, without too much noisy sounds. Track 3 is by two guys based in Amsterdam. They give us a stumpy, pumping track. I really miss some more ingredients and variation in this track, and the melody sounds a bit commercial. For sure not among my favourites on this compilation. Track 4 is by Dynamic (Shay Elmakies and Ben Avital) who really surprised many people with their debut album Dynamix released on Phonokol this summer. The track we get here is not on the album. A pretty good full on track with good variation, melodies, cool sounds and no cheese.

Then we get another track by GMS again. Nothing new to be found here. Just a usual quality GMS track, sounding pretty much like all their other tracks. Deedrah (Frederic Holyszewski) is releasing his third album these days, this time on Spun Records and Solstice Music. Here we get a track by him. One of the best tracks on this compilation, but I think it sounds a bit too much like GMS. I’m really looking forward to his new album, after hearing his great live performance at a festival in Sweden this summer (Arvika Festival 2003). Track 7 is by Soundaholix, which is GMS together with Celli Firmi, more known as Earthling and Vatos Locos. Again a track that sounds a lot like every GMS track. Then we get a track by Joti Sidhu (Psychaos) in a collaboration with Altom (Alexis Cornet and Thomas Dubreuil). This is much more melodic than I’m used to hear from Altom, so I think Mr Joti has done something good in there. Full on melodic trance. Definitely one of the better tracks on this compilation. Track 9 is by Bushman (Tavis Buschman and Paul Taylor). They are way too influenced by GMS I think, and GMS sound is what you get here. Spun finishes this compilation with a new Zorba track. Zorba is the cheesy project of Riktam and Bansi (GMS). Surprisingly they have got another talented musician with them on this track, Momi Ochion, more known for his Angel Tears project he does with Seb Taylor (Shakta)! This track is pretty fluffy as usual, but not as cheesy as the normal Zorba track.

With these Spun releases, you almost know exactly what you get before you buy them. The whole compilation has GMS written all over it, and it doesn’t seem like they are going to change style for a while… If you are not tired of the GMS style yet, you will love this one.
